• Responsible for covering business
and labor issues, with special emphasis on GM, the UAW
and Delphi Corp.
• Responsible for story selection, photo selection,
production, paginating, design and proofing of daily
Business pages, as well as design, layout, content, headline
writing and editing of Saturday business pages, Sunday
Business and Thursday and Sunday Autos pages.
• Responsible for directing the business team and
handling all production, design, editing and team management
issues in the business editor’s absence.
• Helped develop concept, content and design for
new “Money” page. Now responsible for weekly
execution of that page, including story selection, editing,
layout, pagination and coordination of graphic art.
• Had a hand in nearly every page and every story
that originated from the business desk, often editing,
writing headlines and cutlines on deadline. Also wrote,
edited, paginated and executed pages for other sections
of the paper.
• Originally joined the business desk as a regular
reporter. Was immediately promoted to assistant business
editor.

• Responsible for a wide variety of duties, from
designing pages to line editing to working as an assistant
editor on deadline and long-lead projects.
• Responsible for directing the copy desk in the
wire and/or state editor's absence, and in story and
art selection meetings among editors.
• Outside my regular, assigned duties, produced
a steady stream of columns, features and hard news stories,
and routinely assisted in design and execution of pages
outside my primary areas of responsibility.

The Flint Journal - Flint, Michigan, 1998-1999
• Covered the prime city political beat, including
the always-amusing Flint City Council and two completely
different mayors. Also developed and pursued various
feature and hard news stories on the beat.
Day police

The Flint Journal - Flint, Michigan, 1989-1998
• Served as the primary law enforcement reporter
at The Journal, with major responsibilities covering
the largest police and fire departments, all murders,
most initial court proceedings, and myriad other duties,
including routine and offbeat daily and Sunday features,
profiles, and in-depth reports on individual crimes.
• Directed and coordinated team coverage of major
breaking news events, from the office and from the
field.
• Served as lead writer on a special team that
investigated the scourge of crack cocaine that swept
the city in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The series
of reports won the team an advancement of justice award.
• Covered the Flint police beat during the worst
years on record for homicides, as Flint topped the
nation in murders, rapes and serious crimes.
Night police

• Worked a night/weekend shift, mainly covering
the Flint Police Department but also outcounty police
and fire departments. Usually first on and last off of
overnight homicide scenes, major fires and drug raids.
